Whether you live in Seattle or any of the surrounding metro cities, you know that an abundance of water surrounds you. But you might not be aware of the many water sports and places to enjoy them right here in our backyard. The Puget Sound alone is 1,020 cubic miles of surface area to explore, leaving you with more than enough space to try your hand at the many water-related activities locals enjoy during the dry season ( or wet season if you're brave). Boating, water skiing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, kayaking, and swimming are just some of the many activities to experience.

So, you want to windsurf? Let's first get you acquainted with some lessons. Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center will provide you with the fundamentals to give you a solid base to use in your windsurfing adventures. If you are well equipped and have an experience level to hit the open water but unsure of places to drop in at, I've got you covered. One site that comes to mind is Magnuson Park in North Seattle , which is perfect because of its simple launch point and is especially useful when the north winds blow. If the winds are blowing from the south, Newcastle Beach in Bellevue is one of the best places. While you can follow a weather forecast well to know if the winds are high enough to get you sailing, the distinct seasons are in Spring and Fall. They boast the most robust storm systems to give you big wind to surf across Lake Washington.

Now for an activity anyone can enjoy, Kayaking! It is one of the activities you can set your own pace for, whether you want to leisurely take in the area's shorelines during a sunset paddle on Lake Union or challenge yourself to experience the Lakes-To-Locks Water Trail. It is totally up to you. There is an adventure for everyone! The Water Trail includes over 100 public places to access the water, so if you are itching to explore the waterways, whether it's secluded nature, suburban neighborhoods, or heavy urban industries, there is something for everyone to see.

You take the minimal approach to life? I have just the activity for you— no equipment needed. Finding the perfect swimming spot is crucial in beating the heat during summer. The three places to check out that offer excellent swimming amenities are Matthews Beach Park, Golden Gardens Park, and Warren G Magnuson Park. All three provide plenty of space to relax and soak up some sun on the shore.

No matter where you are, or your interests, there is a water activity to enjoy in our region. So, get out there and explore!
