Whidbey Island holds a truly special place in my heart as the place where I grew up and the home to my vacation cabin. This idyllic island boasts picturesque farmland, beautiful beaches, and diverse terrain. It’s a nature-lover’s paradise and even if you don’t make it your permanent home, it certainly deserves a day-trip visit. Whether you’re craving fresh air and outdoor exploration, or you want to stroll the streets of Oak Harbor and shop local boutiques, you can’t go wrong with any type of itinerary. Check out some of my top picks for sights to see and things to do on the island.

Business Spotlights

Begin your island adventure with a tasty pastry and steaming latte at Flower House Café, a charming spot with delectable treats and a beautiful outdoor patio perfect for soaking up the sun on nice days. For a more hearty meal later on in the day when you’ve properly worked up an appetite, I recommend checking out Fare Market. From burgers to Pho to garlic noodles, they offer a variety of dishes sure to please all. Grab a tote, glassware, or a cookbook in their retail space for a fun souvenir to take home.

Activities

To experience a piece of history and witness some incredible natural sights, Fort Ebey is the place to go. Originally built as a defense fort during World War II, the concrete bunkers offer the chance to step back in time and immerse yourself in history. Take advantage of the trails and go on a stroll or bike ride as you admire the stunning views of the water, or pack a lunch and have a picnic along the bluff.

If you haven’t had your fill of adventure after seeing Fort Ebey, then make your way over to South Whidbey State Park to take a look at the miraculous 500-year-old cedar tree. Located among other soaring, ancient trees in a magical forest, this is a stunning piece of paradise on the island.

Seasonal Fun

Hopefully, you’re able to time your trip so that you arrive on the island during Halloween time and can take in the festive decorations and spooky fun all around. If you really want to get into the spirit, Fort Casey State Park is a must-see. On select days, visitors can partake in a frighteningly good time at their Haunted Fort. For fun that’s more suitable for all ages, the park’s Family Fun Activities section is chock-full of games, challenges, and activities perfect for kiddos and adults alike. Plus, feel good that your money will go towards lighthouse restoration projects.

Those are just some of Whidbey Island’s highlights. I hope to see you all out there taking advantage of the incredible island life we’re so lucky to live a mere ferry ride away from.
